Note to Potential CBC and JH Elective Instructors

Part time instructors are expected to:

  • Complete a curriculum outline of a course (of your interest) and submit to Teresa.  All of our CBC modules for students in grades 1-6 are closely linked to the following design principles:  Service & Compassion (service opportunities are always welcome), Diversity & Inclusivity (culture, language, special needs & arts based), Collaboration & Competition (physical adventure based), Primacy of Self-Discovery (performing arts based) and Having of Wonderful Ideas (arts & science based).  Typically these modules run from 5-8 weeks long on Wednesday afternoons.  We are always looking for exciting and creative opportunities for ANSER students.  Feel free to contact Teresa about an idea you have.
  • For JH elective courses, instructors are expected to create a course in which there are high quality tangible outcome(s)/product (s) for students (group or individual).  For example, in an art course students would complete a finished mosaic project, a rock climbing elective group might make a short video/brochure about the safety rules etc.  At the end of each elective course students should take away new understandings and knowledge.  Your task as an instructor is to create ways for students to demonstrate their new knowledge & understandings.  The final outcome/product must be indentified and communicated to students prior to the start of the elective.  In other words, students should know what they are signing up to do when they select each elective.  Elective courses take place on Thursday afternoons.
  • Instructors are expected to work well with young children and/or adolescents.  You must have some classroom management skills and be able to quickly establish rapport with your group of students.  Be willing to talk about your background/expertise in the area you are teaching.  Plan for a short “get-to-know-you” activity on the first day so YOU can learn something about each student.  Use name tags so you may quickly learn names.
  • Manage your time well.  Each JH elective course or CBC module must be well-planned including back-up plans for students who finish early and those that need a bit more time.  If your course is outdoors, a plan for inclement weather is a must.  The goal is to have all students engaged during the entire course time.
  • Arrive a few minutes early if set up time is required.  Classroom space must be left clean and orderly.  I’d like instructors to work with students to leave the room in better shape than you found it.

If you would like to explore the possibility of teaching in our Community-Based Curriculum or Junior High Elective program, please contact Teresa England at
